OVERVIEW: ICELAND

However, in the 2013 general election things turned out differently; when counting had been completed (not a massive task in a country where the electorate turnout -.at an impressive 81.44 per cent – is still less than 240,000) the Independence Party with 26.7 per cent had obtained the most votes, just ahead of the Progressive Party with 24.43 per cent, pushing the Social Democrats into third place with only 12.85 per cent. This was the biggest defeat to any ruling party since independence from Denmark in 1944. Iceland’s parliament, the Althing, claims to be the world's oldest parliamentary institution.
