Analysis

Analysis:

OVERVIEW: HUNGARY

This mid-sized central European country is the region’s largest debtor. Not only have investors grown wary of the a potential political polarisation, bodies such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have also registered concerns over the loss of independence by the central bank. In the case of the IMF (see below) the discussion of a new line of credit which has been put on hold. Nor did the end-2011 downgrading of Hungary’s credit rating to ‘junk’ level do much to help.In fact, by the beginning of 2012 there was more bad news than good for Mr Orban to dwell on. Paranoia abounded, as a second credit rating agency downgraded Hungarian debt, the slide in value of the national currency, the Forint, continued.
