Estonia’s resurgent growth was largely credited to a better export performance. Estonia has been helped by having the lowest national debt in the European Union, a modest 6.7 per cent in 2010. Its governments have focussed on balancing the budget rather than spending more when economic conditions were better.

By the end of 2011, the senior bureaucrats of Estonia’s political élite mighty have had cause to regret their decision to adopt the euro as the national currency at the beginning of the year. By mid-2012, five (Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Spain and Cyprus) European Union (EU) member countries had sought ‘bail-out’ assistance from Brussels.
