This is Denmark. We are Danes. We keep our distance. We do not pick a seat close to strangers if other seats are available. We do not talk to strangers in the trains.

Denmark’s ruling Social Democrats are no strangers to government. They have led a string of coalition governments for most of the second half of the twentieth century in this Scandinavian country well known for its liberal traditions. Thus it was something of a shock and a change to see Prime Minster Helle Thorning-Schmidt languishing in the opinion polls at 14.4 per cent in April 2013 the party’s lowest rating since 1898.In the 2011 general election the Social Democrats had taken 24.8 per cent of the vote.

An article in the London Economist took the view that the Social Democrat government was often more popular with business. In April 2013 it struck two deals with the centre-right opposition to invest DKr90 billion (US$16 billion) to reform taxation. The government’s plans did not go down with the coalition government’s left wing, not least because  the tax reforms were to be partly financed by cuts to student grants and to unemployment pay.
