OVERVIEW: MOLDOVA

In his speech to parliament, the 63-year-old President promised to maintain Moldova's pro-European Union (EU) outlook and to try to convince Moldova’s EU opponents that EU membership offered the only realistic prospect to bring prosperity to what was still ‘the poorest country in Europe.’ President Timofti also promised good relations with neighbouring Romania and Ukraine, and what he described as a ‘strategic partnership’ with Russia.
