In five decades South Korea (the Republic of South Korea) has come a long way. Few South Korean nationals, let alone nationals of its allies at the time, can recall the period in 1950 when North Korean forces swept south, overwhelming all opposition. Caught asleep at the wheel, the United States called on the Security Council to invoke the United Nations Charter and brand the North Koreans as aggressors. This was done and military assistance was sought from member states. American troops arrived to stiffen resistance, as the British government responded by sending elements of the Far East Fleet, followed by ships of Commonwealth navies. The war lasted from 1950 until 1953, with changes in military leadership and fortunes. China’s support for North Korea had largely neutralised the Western Allies air superiority.
