In 1989 the then King imposed a ‘One Nation, One People’ policy, which imposed elitist Drukpa mores on the entire population. The Nepali language was banned in schools and Hindu ‘pathshalas’, or seminaries, which taught the Sanskrit scriptures were closed down. Two years after King Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicatedin favour of his son, Jigme Khesarnamgyel Wangchuk in2008, Bhutan became a constitutional monarchy – in principle.
