Buy Country Review

Better yet, the man at the top, President José Mujica, is admirably self-effacing. With unusual frankness for a politician, he referred to the new law (on the legalisation of cannabis) as an experiment. He lives in a humble cottage, drives himself to work in a Volkswagen Beetle and flies economy class. Modest yet bold, liberal and fun loving, Uruguay is our country of the year. Felicitaciones!

Overview: Uruguay

Described as ‘the poorest president in the world,’ the 78 year old Mr Mujica’s inaugural speech, when elected in 2010 was recognised as a tour de force. In it he set out his vision of a country where ‘everyone is empowered by the quality of their education to lead fulfilling lives and to participate in the wellbeing of the nation and of their fellow citizens.’ If accomplished it would make Uruguay perhaps not the Switzerland, but more the Sweden of the southern hemisphere.
