Pemex has something of an iconic status within the Mexican economy. Created in 1938 following the nationalisation (aka expropriation) of the assets of the foreign oil companies present in Mexico, it has traditionally been seen – particularly by many Mexican  politicians - as a symbol of national progress and independence. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth – the reality is that Mexican politicians have long regarded Pemex as an inviolate cash cow, providing Mexico’s governments with a large chunk of their income.
