Terres Australes

Buy Country Review

It’s known in English as the ‘Desolation Island’, which tells you all you need to know about how these sub-Antarctic islands were viewed. There are no permanent inhabitants but temporary scientific researchers – and you can’t get there by air, only ship. I persuaded the French authorities to allow me to spend time on it in 2005 and make a documentary for Channel 4. I had a wonderful time and was reminded that some remote places are actually quite large. Although the main island, Grand Terre, looks like a spot on the map, it’s almost the size of Cyprus

Matthew Parris, British broadcaster and journalist.
