Overview: Niger

The Nigerien Democratic Movement (MODEN) withdrew from the ruling coalition – Mouvance pour la Renaissance du Niger (MNR) (Movement for the Renaissance of Niger), led by the Parti Nigérien pour la Démocratie et le Socialisme (PNDS) (Niger Party for Democracy and Socialism), in August 2013. In view of the continued criticism aimed at the government by the second strongest party this was not unexpected. Nevertheless the political situation in Niger is still improving after the 2010 coup with the national institutions envisaged in the Constitution being gradually put in place.
