I realized that I was African when I came to the United States. Whenever Africa came up in my college classes, everyone turned to me. It didn't matter whether the subject was Namibia or Egypt; I was expected to know, to explain.

Analysis

Analysis:

Profile: Namibia

The South-West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) has dominated politics since independence from South Africa in 1990. It has maintained its commanding majority, taking 74.3 per cent of the last parliamentary vote in November 2009. There are no opposition parties that could currently challenge this position. In 2012 the 71-year-old Hage Geingob was re-elected by SWAPO as the party’s vice-president and, consequently, President Hifikepunye Pohamba’s heir apparent when he steps down after serving his two-term limit in 2015. A Geingob-led administration will likely be business friendly and will probably avoid more radical policy ideas on the state's economic role and land reform, with political stability expected to be maintained.
